ultramarine-cyanotype-paper-craft-kit
Ultramarine Cyanotype Paper Craft Kit - Ocean Scenes

7 years & up

Create underwater scenes with the power of the sun!

This intriguing art activity is based on the photographic process of cyanotype. Place the elements of your reef scene on the photosensitive paper. Place it in sunlight and a negative of the scene is produced on the paper.

Rinse the paper in a clean water bath and watch as the creations appear on the blue background. Once the paper is dry, use the included markers to color in the pattern!

Contents:

8 sheets of photosensitive paper (8.25 x 11 in)

around 100 patterns printed on plastic

1 sheet of plexiglass

4 coloured felt-tip markers

Note: The paper is VERY sensitive to light. Keep unused sheets away from UV exposure until you’re ready to use them.

How it works in a nutshell:
The paper is coated in a photosensitive solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, there are two chemical reactions that happen to create the Prussian blue color. Any ions that were not exposed to the UV light get rinsed away. This is what creates the white “print” of your objects!

The cyanotype process was invented by Sir John Herschel in the mid-1800s. It was an early type of photography. Herschel used this method to make copies of his notes and diagrams. This is the origin of the term “blueprint!”

PS: Check out this Google Arts & Culture presentation about Anna Atkins and her work in cyanotype photography. She is credited with creating the first book entirely illustrated with photography!

The Forgotten Story of Anna Atkins

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0423/3311/0431/files/djeco-ultramarine-cyanotype-ocean-scenes-craft-kit-box-1.jpg?v=1778500377
